Confronting Problems With Public Education

By Patty Goff

Public schools are in a position that has become too bad that most people have decided to lose hope that there will ever be change. The system is affected by very huge challenges for quite a long period of time yet they do not look like they will change any time soon. The government constantly keeps giving assurances about changing this structure but it is certainly easier to say than actually do. Problems with public education impact everyone including parents, students and also their teachers.

The following are some of the common challenges that are shared by government schools all over the world today. One of the problems is the classroom size. These schools usually have a lot of children but many areas still have the problem of classroom sizes that are literally about to burst out of the seams. When a single class has so many students, it is hard for the teacher to concentrate on every one of them.

Poverty is also a factor that has had a great impact on the public school system. Reports say that approximately 22 percent of children in America live at or even below poverty level. The poverty level is defined as a family that earns less than 23,000 dollars per year. Children living under extreme poverty have the highest dropout rates because it is hard to study if a person does not have enough sleep or food.

One cannot utilize their full academic potential if they have a lot of stress coming from home. There are those children who are usually forced to get a part time job to help their families and this also affects their school works since they lack time to work on their school work. The fact that they lack basic essentials is also a factor that affects their education greatly.

The family factors also have a great effect on the learning of a student. Every teacher can confirm that the ability of a student to learn is greatly affected by what is going on at home. Things such as domestic violence, divorce and extreme poverty can affect the school attendance rate of the affected student. Absenteeism will definitely make the student get low grades.

Technology is something that cannot be overlooked in the schools systems today. Reports say that the children today are even more technologically advanced than their teachers. Public schools lack the technological equipment that can enable the teachers to compete with what the children already know and this also affects the government schools.

Bullying is certainly something that exists especially in the state schools. These are issues that some people condone but this is wrong because they also impact the children mainly the bullied ones. Advancement on technology has even made this eviler by creating other avenues for the bullies. Virtual bullying is carried out on social Media and it also impacts the children greatly. It can be answerable for various suicides.

The last and greatest problems that are facing this system is poor funding. The funding for the public education system has been below average for many years. Low funding means fewer teachers and other members of staff. This has a very big impact on the way the schools are managed and in the end it is the students who will be affected most by this problem.
