Information On Womens Health Initiatives To Prevent FGM

By Stacey Burt

Cultures are very fundamental in society as they greatly influence the way of life of many people; however, some cultures have been outdated and need to be done away with. For instance, female genital mutilation is a cultural practice that used to be popular and significant in the transitioning of a girl to a woman in the olden day; moreover, times have changed and these traditions need to be eliminated and that is why there are Womens health initiatives to prevent FGM.

This might have been normal over the years but the truth is times have changes and so is the way of life; consequently, these cultural practices have lost their significance. Apart from this, it has been proven that there may be health complications associated with these practices to the extent that lives are put at risk. The need to prove ones feminity is no longer a responsibility that women have to take and therefore, it is only right to abandon this cruel act.

The worst thing about this practice is the fact that traditions made it compulsory for all girls and therefore every girl child is forced to go through with the cut whether they are willing or not. This is the highest level of abuse and given that parent supports this practice and do not mind taking their girls through the cut, something has to be done to stop this.

During its invention, this was meant to be a practice that signified the maturity of girls as they were introduced to womanhood, and for this, they saw the need to make the cut as a way of reducing their sexual pleasure as a means to reduce infidelity cases. Usually, the procedure is done by incising the clitoris which is among the most sensitive spots in the reproductive system of women.

Considering the fact that the procedure is medically sensitive, it is only sane if its performed by a trained professional in that field so as to avoid risking the life of the person undergoing it. However, this is never the case as most girls are taken to unqualified doctors who are tasked with this responsibility and can risk incurring fatal damages to the girl or even cause their death.

Some of the damages that these girls incur are such as, infections, barrenness, lifelong severe pains which makes it difficult to give birth and sometimes even death. In addition to this, girls who undergo the cut are denied the pleasure of enjoying sex as they should which goes a long way in affecting the social lives.

Whereas the cut is beneficial for men, the opposite can be said for women and therefore the rights of women should be protected by stopping this malice act once and for all. For this, heavy punishment should be placed on individuals who allow their kids to go through with the procedure and more so the people who perform it.

With the society being civilized, people ought to take up different roles and try to put this inhuman act to rest as it has for long been used as an excuse to infringe on the rights of others. What is more, democracy gives everyone the right to freedom of choice which should be the case to these young girls who are forced into cultural practices that have been passed by time as an excuse to keep moral order.
